One of the most remarkable and disturbing cases of an encounter with a haunting apparition is that claimed by the English ghost hunter, Robert Thurston Hopkins (1884–1958). In his book, Adventures with Phantoms, published in 1946, Thurston Hopkins described an incident that allegedly took place during a midnight ghost walk in the 1930s in Glydwish Wood, a wild and overgrown location with a sinister reputation on the South Downs in East Sussex. After leading a party of thirty walkers across the countryside around Burwash village, Hopkins took his group around the edge of the wood while a journalist friend, given the name Blunden in the book, explored inside by himself. After some time, the main group heard a distressing cry and Blunden was eventually discovered wandering in a distressed and confused state amongst the trees: he later claimed to have encountered the apparition of a dead man with rotting skin and a distended neck, as if from a hangman’s rope, which had blundered out of the undergrowth towards him. A month later, the ghost hunter returned to Glydwish Wood accompanied by an assistant and on this occasion encountered the frightening figure for himself, ‘a ragged man, choking and clutching at its long scraggy neck, his eyes bulging out of a withered and almost fleshless face’. Thurston Hopkins was of the opinion that the ghost was that of Daniel Leney, a local thief who had been hanged in 1827 for the murder of a farmer named Benjamin Russell.
